Of the thirty one prisoners who escaped from Barberton prison in Mpumalanga at the end of last month police have recaptured four and shot dead a fifth who was found asleep in a house in Mooi Plaas. The dead man had been implicated in various crimes including rape.
The escape took place after the men cut an opening in the metal roof of their cell. The Barberton police station commander and her deputy were transferred pending an investigation into the escape.
A further five men escaped from a prison in Witbank on New Year's Eve, one of who has since been shot dead.
By my calculations that leaves 30 felons still on the run (will anyone notice?)
